Downloading the STAR Research Data Files

Research files are available in a variety of formats, depending on the type of system and record format (Fixed-Length ASCII, Tab-Delimited, dBASE IV or Access database) that is being used.  You should check your application software manuals to verify which record format best suits your needs.

These downloads contain the same information as the Internet reports.  Each self-extracting file contains one file in the specified format.  The self-extracting file can require up to approximately 30 MB of storage on your system.  Expanding the file will require 90 MB - 1 GB of storage on your system.

Click the link for the file that corresponds to your system and preferred record format, the file will automatically download.  After the download is complete, you will need to uncompress the file by running it.  After the file has been uncompressed, follow the directions in your application software manuals to open the file in your database, spreadsheet, or other program.

Access 97 database

Date Posted: April 14, 2000
File: AC97star.exe 40 MB, Windows self-extracting compressed file
Minimum Download Times:
T1 > 4 minutes
128K (ISDN) > 43 minutes
56 > 1 hour, 38 minutes
28.8 > 3 hours, 12 minutes
Description: A self-extracting compressed file that contains one Access 97 (Access 2000 compatible) database file named "STAR Research File.mdb".

Zip Files

The Research files for Windows are packaged in a self-extracting archive, to save on space and download time.  Self-extracting archives have an extension of .EXE, and can be run as commands or double-clicked on just like any other application. When a self-extracting archive is run, the files in the archive are automatically extracted into the directory of your choice.  You do not need an unzip program (like PKZIP or WinZip) to extract files from these self-extracting archives.

Research File Formats: Files 1  and 2

There are two research file formats shown: File 1 - Entities and File 2 - Test Data.   File 1 (Entities) is for county, district and school data.  File 2 is the test data.  The formats are described below.
