About the SABE/2 and Aprenda 3 Scores Reported

The SABE/2 and Aprenda 3 scores reported are reference-group percentile ranks (RPRs). A reference group percentile rank compares the achievement of ELs in California to the achievement of a national sample of Spanish-speaking students in bilingual classes. The reference-group percentile rank for the average student (RPR of the "Avg" Student Score) estimates the individual percentile rank for a hypothetical average student in this group. (See the “Term and Score Explanations” available at the STAR website.)

% Scoring Above 75th RP, % Scoring At or Above 50th RP, and % Scoring Above 25th RP

The “%” shown on the report in each grade level column is the percentage of students in the school, school district, county, or the state that scored higher than where 75%, 50%, or 25% of the students in a national sample of Spanish-speaking students in bilingual classes scored. Reference-group percentiles (RPs) shown on the left-hand side of each report are for the national sample. If the school, school district, county, or state results mirrored those of the national reference group, the percentages reported would be 25% Scoring Above the 75th RP, 50% Scoring At or Above the 50th RP, and 75% Scoring Above the 25th RP. Percentages higher than these in the grade-level columns indicate that the students in the school, school district, county, or the state performed better than the students in the national reference group sample. Percentages lower than these indicate that the students in the school, school district, county, or the state did not perform as well as the students in the national reference group sample. To obtain the percentage of students in the school, district, county, or state that scored in the lowest quarter of the reference group sample, subtract the percent scoring above the 25th RP from 100.

Comparing Group Test Results

Since Aprenda 3 does not change from year to year, reviewers may compare the test results from between and among years, as well as between and among schools and/or districts for the tests administered in spring 2006 and spring 2007. Students whose scores fall above the 50th reference-group percentile ranks represent those students who have demonstrated achievement at or above grade level on each specific test.

Comparing Aprenda 3 results with the previously used SABE/2 is not appropriate because the tests may assess different content areas or have different levels of difficulty and compare the performance of California students to the performance of different national samples of students.

Since the SABE/2 was unchanged from year to year, reviewers may compare the test results from between and among years, as well as between and among schools and/or districts for the tests administered from spring 1999 through spring 2005. The most defensible comparison is the Percent of Students Scoring Above the 50th RP. This is the percentage of students in the group purported to have demonstrated achievement at or above grade level on each specific test.
